The Skinny Eats: Hello Fresh (April 2017)

Hey there! How are you today? It's the end of April, can you believe it?

Do you still remember The Skinny Eats from a year ago? If you can't or have only started reading recently, here's a quick recap:
  • "The Skinny Eats" (formerly Delectables) is intended for quick foodie "two cents" (maybe a few rants, but mostly raves) from yours truly --- the skinny lady who surprise, surprise actually eats but sadly (for me) hardly gains a pound and even loses more just by breathing, lol. Compared to the more sumptuous, three-course equivalent in the former Delectables posts, these ones are more concise in the same eat-and-run pace when one goes through pit stops.
For the second instalment, The Skinny Eats will be my two cents on the meal planning and shopping subscription service called Hello Fresh.

The Saturday Agenda: Liverpool

Happy Easter my dear! I hope that you're making the best of this long weekend break.

  • While most of London travelled further to warmer cities or countries, I opted for a short day trip and as such, had to contend with below fifteen-degree weather.

The Saturday Agenda: Rambling Through Sunny London Part 1

Hey there!! How was your week? I hope it went well at work or with whatever kept you busy for the past five days. Mine was exhausting physically and mentally. Two days into the work week, I was already looking forward to Saturday, lol.

Last night, I joined the girls (Liza and Verna) for Movie Friday. We saw Beauty and the Beast. I know, it was quite belated, but I guess that goes with age --- no rush to be ahead and join the premiere night bandwagon anymore. We are way past that stage and we often choose to enjoy things at our own pace.

The Saturday Agenda: Going Through My TSA @ A+I Routine and Trying Something New

It seems that I now have an Angel+Islington routine. It became a pinned, default agenda in my Saturday afternoon for these past weeks. You might be thinking, 'Doesn't she do anything else other than go to Islington on Saturdays?' Hahaha. Surely, I don't want to bore you with my routine by posting the same set of pictures and captions every week. Please bear with me as I post this for maybe the last time --- my typical Saturday at Angel+Islington. The next time I mention TSA @ A+I, you can just go back and re-read this post :)

Don't worry, it looks like I will be doing something different in the coming weekends, and I sure did something different this Saturday (read on to the end of this post)!! But it doesn't take away my hunch that there must be something special and addictive about Angel+Islington for this place to bore itself into me, quite literally, (-;) and stamp its own agenda in my Saturday afternoon.

The typical TSA @ A+I goes like this:
  • Buy flowers. I have a favourite. There's this lovely stall near The York and Toni & Guy, along Upper Street. I think it's called Angelic Flower. I usually buy the hand-tied bouquet because this includes a good mix of vibrant colours - greens, roses and tulips. Its height and hand-tied size is just perfect for my vase, too.

The Saturday Agenda: Prepping for British Summer Time

The clocks are moving forward tomorrow! British Summer Time, am I ready for you? For those who live outside UK, British Summer Time or BST is when UK time is advanced one hour forward of Greenwich Mean Time, so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.

The Saturday Agenda: Making Handmade Soaps + Persian Lunch

Why do I share my Saturday agenda with you? Good question. My two cents on this:
  1. Currently, it is my only "free time" when non-work events of interest actually happen. Other than these, I'd most likely bore you with a lecture on audit, risk and controls, hahaha. And on a Saturday, no thanks.
  2. I want to encourage you to go out, get out of your comfort zone (which will most likely be your very comfortable, warm and cosy bed) and LIVE OUT LIFE!! Don't get me wrong. I am an introvert myself and staying indoors with a cup of hot cocoa and immersing myself in the world of books are my closest to heaven. However, I've made a pact with this introvert self of mine that I will go out more and see the "outside world" every now and then. Why? Life is short. We are here for the journey - THE experience. :)
So here goes my agenda for this Saturday...

The Skinny Eats: In Singapore (April 2016)

"The Skinny Eats" (formerly Delectables) is intended for quick foodie "two cents" (maybe a few rants, but mostly raves) from yours truly --- the skinny lady who surprise, surprise actually eats but sadly (for me) hardly gains a pound and even loses more just by breathing, lol. Compared to the more sumptuous, three-course equivalent in the former Delectables posts, these ones are more concise in the same eat-and-run pace when one goes through pit stops.

The ratings I use are simple:
❤ Nah, did not meet expectations.
❤❤ Good enough for a one-off meal but not as memorable.
❤❤❤ Loved it! Recommended and will not mind going back!!!
To keep it focused, these are based purely on the overall dining experience taste-wise. Service, food presentation and price were not factored in the above rating. Some comments about these other factors may be included in my notes under the particular pit stop, as deemed necessary.

For the first installment of The Skinny Eats, here's the rundown of 17 "pit stops" (yes 17, and I didn't even include ALL food stops) made during my three-week Singapore assignment this April 2016:

Pit stop 1: Toastbox (Suntec Food Republic)
Ordered: Laksa and kopi
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes: Order just the right bowl size 'cause the coconut milk in the laksa can be quite overwhelming in large amounts. You have to have this in Singapore! Even if there are Toastbox franchises in other countries (including the Philippines), I strongly believe that the laksa in Singapore tastes much better and authentic. If you find time to try this in hawker centres, all the much better!
Notes from IG: Laksa, I missed you!!! #laksa #toastbox till I drop #nofilter (P.S. I've been good; only 2 cups of kopi in 7 days.)

My Reading List for February and March 2016

I usually buy books in batches and schedule to read them for certain occasions.
Here goes my reading list for February and March 2016:
  1. Six Thinking Hats by Edward De Bono - for immediate reading
  2. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (The Japanese art of decluttering and organizing) by Marie Kondo - for Chinese New Year reading
  3. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes - for Valentine's Day reading
  4. Stylized by Liz Uy - for rereading
  5. Besties by Solenn Heussaff and Georgina Wilson - for downtime reading
  6. This is Me, Love Marie by Heart Evangelista-Escudero - for downtime reading
  7. The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri Pardiso, A Verse Translation by Allen Mandelbaum - for Holy Week break reading

I love reading in general, regardless of the genre and the subject. Don't judge me by the books I read :) I am not them. Just give me a book and a quiet corner, and it will be bliss.

In a nutshell, thinking is actually a skill that can be learned.
This is THE book that made be actually applaud after reading it (yes, literally clap, clap, clap), and that has never happened to me before.
I have my OC tendencies and I thought that I am organized enough to survive in a cramped space. But this book opened me to new concepts that I was excited --- no, giddy like a child who discovered the "secrets of the universe" --- to actually apply them. What's more amazing is that this book contains NO pictures at all, like most books on organizing. And still, I breezed through reading and found it hard to put down. About 7-8 large trash bags later, I vowed that I will not be coming back to cluttered and pack-rat tendencies ever. As in most books and new concepts, take what you need and leave the rest.

On Instagram and Facebook: Didn't get to read this on V-day, thank goodness. It was kinda of a letdown 'cause my tears filled a dipper instead of buckets, 😳 Go ahead and read this if you wanna be heartbroken 💔 and all, but be prepared to question your beliefs on love and letting go. #postvalentine#bookish #heart #books

This book was already made into a movie and I gave this to a friend who felt she needed to read up before seeing the film adaptation (She informed me that there was absolutely zero stock and a long wait list in Cebu bookstores).

My eyes were swollen after reading this, even if I already expected the "sensitive issues" that will become the plot twist. I'm sorry but whoever wrote that blurb (i.e., short promotional piece summarizing the book story, usually printed on the back or rear dust-jacket of a book) didn't do it justice. I dismissed this book as typical chick-lit (though I love this genre in a different way) several times after reading the blurb, until the book reviews convinced me that there is depth to this.

Yes, I read these, too. Don't judge me :) In my most objective lens, I think that these three are quite helpful resources for women in urban cities in Metro Manila.
Among the three, 'This is me, Love Marie' was the easiest to read. Done in one sitting. Whoever did the layout for this book did a commendable job.

'StyLIZed' was a breeze to read, too. Except that I felt it was too celebrity-focused and too glamorous for mortals like me who do not have a glam team at our beck and call. I also observed that majority of the celebs used as muses (I think 9 of 10?) came from the same network/management. I don't know how that is going to play with the other side of the fence though.

For me, the one with the most substance is 'Besties'. Not really easy reading. I think the layout and choice of publishing material are factors to this (i.e., small font, paper is not as glossy as the other two). It may not be fair to compare the three since they are meant to tackle different subjects. But among the three, this is the only one which discussed real issues such as body shaming, bullying and bashing in social media. There is even a short 101 on finance, explained in simple terms by Georgina, who surprise, has a double major in Accounting and Finance and graduated from the University of Sydney with honors. I may not agree with Solenn and Georgina 100%, but I admire their honesty.

The Italian language is beautiful as well as the English translation.

I bought a highlighter to mark my favorite verses. In my case, highlights in my books mean that: I believed in those lines to actually bookmark them for future reference, or the lines were just too beautiful to forget, or that I was immersed enough in the world it created. I do not necessarily subscribe to Dante's universe. For me this is just divine comedy --- a very compelling piece of literature. But I easily fall in love with old classic poems, and this is no exception.

To all the bibliophiles out there, enjoy the break and happy reading!!!
XOXO

Delectables: Foodie Shots - Behind the Scenes

It is the last leg of the Lenten season. I am not a Roman Catholic but I opted to make use of the holiday break to reflect on things. In my faith, I believe it's a time when we fast on our excesses, spiritually and physically. While I believe that the former is the heart of it all, I understand why some of us decided on physical fasting. Usually, on food.

In my rarely quiet side of the building, I browsed through my social media accounts and found out that I've posted at least 30 food-related posts since January 2016. Does that make me guilty of food porn?

Food porn, as defined by Wikipedia refers to "glamorized spectacular visual presentation of cooking or eating in advertisementsinfomercials, blogs, cooking shows or other visual media".

My first food post in 2016

Someday, we hopefully will reach that age when eating healthy becomes a lifestyle instead of a New Year's resolution... #positive #grateful

What actually happened: After a very challenging 2015 and my uncle's death, I thought that my Mama deserved a treat to give her a fresh and positive start in 2016.

A Second Chance – The Movie: A Sort-of Review

Life is not a tower of peanut butter sandwiches.

Credits: https://taylordfood.wordpress.com/

Right off the bat, let me say this. This is NOT a second chance, folks. This is technically the third chance.

If you want to come in better equipped for this movie sequel, you need to see the “One More Chance” part which started all this “hugot” heart-wrenching lines on coming to terms with love the second time around. Then, you will understand why literally the second chance had passed for the two main characters, Popoy and Basha, when they chose to start over after one significantly messy breakup, and this chapter is their third chance. You will understand the engineer-architect partnership as well as the Thursday dinners that they had to have with their circle of friends, which called for at least one occasion or significant event to be celebrated each time. And yeah, you will understand THAT “shampoo” joke (That one I never got the entire time I was in the movie house, considering that I've seen the first movie more than once).

I'm writing this sort-of review, fresh from seeing the movie hours ago. I haven't read any movie review from the authorities out there. I steered clear of opinions and any article discussing perspectives on the movie to have an objective, clean slate before going in and seeing the movie. I heard rave reviews, but those were expected patriotism coming from the network channel and stars sharing the same movie outfit, Star Cinema. I came in “briefed” with only three spoilers courtesy of watching accidentally the night time talk show, Tonight with Boy Abunda: (1) Popoy's struggles over a business on the verge of bankruptcy, (2) falling in love with failure, and (3) the what-if vs. what-is analogy. On hindsight, these were actually the skeleton, the three main bones, that make up the story of “A Second Chance”.

Recently, Star Cinema was more experimental and veered away from the usual story-telling sequence. A Second Chance's story was hinged on an amateur thesis interview conducted by a Psychology student with the married couple, Popoy and Basha. There is similarity with the approach done for another Star Cinema movie, Bride for Rent, but this one took a more serious note. Such experimental takes are more than welcome. We are tired of the usual chronology of events from childhood to adulthood, from January to December, from friendship to romance.

Popoy and Basha's transition from the just-married to struggling-to-stay-married phases seemed believable. Basha's ever-present wigs and the back-and-forth from chic to “losyang” were there to pace the audience as we witnessed the wife's evolution throughout the different stages of marriage. The items of interest during the couple's arguments ranged from trivial cutlery and attempts at interior design to the gnawing probability of a third party. There was the attempt to capture as closely as possible these real-couple conflicts. But hey, you have to fit all seven years in two hours of movie time! It felt strangled and heavy, at least for me. But I guess, that was the intent anyway.

Arci Muñoz and Billy Crawford's characters were new in this sequel and were introduced for conflict. For me, they were not perfectly effective in coming across as believably whole characters. They appeared as almost one-dimension caricature-ish accidents that were written out to be inclined on particular mannerisms and ideals. But they did manage to deliver the expected rift to tip off further the ongoing imbalance between the married couple.

Khalil Ramos' character as the young, wide-eyed, most junior employee of Popoy and Basha's firm was more memorable. He was actually there, present. With his convenience-store morning coffee and enthusiasm. Even with less dialogue and exposure, he came across as very relatable. In his short moments as Noel the character, we went back to that time when we were that same twenty-something hopeful, with so much faith in the world.

I felt that there was conscious effort to incorporate “hugot” quotable lines in the movie. Too conscious in fact, that the lines had to be in English prose –- the kind of well-written reflections you get after going on a solitary retreat or getting drunk. These lines provided cinematic appeal to the mandatory scenes of pain and angst: the close-ups of the actors, the tears, the pregnant pause. But they are far from the real deal. It's kind of hard to imagine real people conversing like that. Can't blame the writer. The bar was set too high by “One More Chance” whose lines became so classic that they stuck with us for nearly a decade. I bet we will still be quoting these for a much longer time. A Second Chance, on the other hand, was too choreographed to really resonate, to gain even “semi-real” depth.

What was my take-away? I don't want to use the what-if, what-is, what-was and what-will-be analogy here, though I think that that was the point the movie was trying to get across. Good point, but it seemed overused. I hope the analogy wasn't mentioned more than once in the film. A scene or a message, if strong enough, can stand on its own and need not be repeated to drive a point.

I'm allowed my own perspective, I hope. My take-away from the movie? Hmm. Less is more.

For me, the more poignant scenes – the ones that moved me – were those with less dialogues. The wide-eyed innocence in Khalil Ramos' Noel as everybody else left the office. That scene when Basha came home and hugged her mother. No words, just tears. Several shots of peanut butter sandwich towers throughout the film – the first one perfectly balanced, the last one almost leaning to collapse. Those said a lot.

I wish there were less words in some pivotal scenes. To show that Popoy and Basha were no longer sitting next to each other. That Popoy cared. That Basha was in so much pain. When they remembered their marriage vows. That way, I (and audiences like me) would have more time to empathize and feel the crests and troughs of holding on and letting go.

Overall, A Second Chance delivered. On cinema and box office expectations. Tears, “hugot” lines, and ever afters. These are the things that sell.

But life, the real one outside the silver screen, is more complex --- salty and sweet, well-measured and planned but with surprising degrees of failure. Like a tower of peanut butter sandwiches. Or maybe not.

SPOILER ALERT. Stop here if you have not seen the movie yet and do not want to get some juicy bits ahead. Don't tell me I didn't warn you.

Out of Office: Went to the Ball

Hello lovely readers!!!
I just want to share with you my gold ball moments last October 27, 2015.

The table decked in gold, ready for the sit-down dinner
Thank God 'cause my feet, which are now not so used to walking in high heels, couldn't possibly take a buffet, hahaha.

My gold bag --- the mandatory gold touch to my ensemble (in rebellious pink!)
This is from Via Venetto, a high-quality Filipino brand of shoes and bags that I proudly endorse whenever I get the chance to. There is not much marketing literature or write-ups about the Via Venetto brand (Facebook: via.venetto.phils), but that doesn't mean that they do not deserve it.
Via Venetto's quality and customer service are just top-notch that word-of-mouth is more than enough to reach those who value high quality and believe in the Filipino brand.
Here's a full view of my bag, as well as a selfie :)
The bag's handle and body are made of glass, wooden and plastic beads put together with such intricacy and care that I see a mother's love in the weave.
Overall, this unique handbag is dainty and small enough to go with the ball's gold theme. I see myself going back to this in future gatherings: simple yet classy for evenings.
With pride, I held this bag knowing that it was made by women from the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong.
Truly a beautiful masterpiece with a heart --- every one deserves a second chance.
What were inside my bag?
Gold ball invitation
Cellphone
Room card key
EOS lip balm (the blue ball)

Indeed, I was home before midnight. 11:25 PM, to be exact :)

The shoe!
My gold ball pair is also from Via Venetto.
The left shoe was shot in the background in typical Cinderella-left-the-glass-slipper fashion.
I wore a princess-y crown, courtesy of the gold ball organizers.
To complete the Cinderella story, a white rose was just in order :)

After returning to my room from the ball and before that much needed bath before bedtime, I played around with the camera and came up with these. :)
Surprised with how these turned out, I ended up posting this collage on my Instagram (@genefel), Facebook (genefel.ober) and Twitter (@gmotweet) accounts.

Selfie rationale:
A lady's gotta have beautiful memories stashed somewhere to cheer her up in the future.
"Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?...."
(: So goes Ed Sheeran's song...
#thinkingoutloud

Smile more.
There is no midnight, no deadline, when it comes to picking up that shoe where you last staggered and fell, and coming home to realizations that make up your gold-decked road to the "true north".

Wicked witches of the East and jealous stepsisters aside, finding your "true north" for me is finding God's will --- the one thing that will give you truly lasting happiness.

Cheers to my fellow Cinderellas out there!

The Saturday Agenda: Music and Tonteki

Hello Saturday! How fast time flies, my dears. Now, we are on the second half of 2015. How are you getting on with your annual game plan? I hope that 2015 is working in your favor.

My regular Saturdays usually consist of chilling out at my room and doing my weekly laundry. Vel, one of my closest besties in the BFF circle, usually spends her Saturdays sleeping. Yes, sleeping. No! This has got to stop! Hahaha. That's when we decided to spend this Saturday for a sort-of quarterly-ish catchup.

Bought the tickets a day in advance to avoid the queue and the risk of not getting tickets on the day itself. It also forced us to push through with The Saturday Agenda (no more excuses to sleep in or cancel, hahaha) ;)
What I thought of the movie? Please click 'Read more'.

Make or Break @ 33

What's so special about 33?

I don't think that anyone ever reaches an age when you will feel ready and complete. At least, that's how I see every milestone or birthday.

I'm always a work in progress...
  • I try to be better, kinder, productive and more patient every year. I try every time to be the person that my Mama can be proud of.
  • I try to be more friendly, more optimistic and more fun.
  • I try to take care of my health, love myself more, and spend quality time with the people who matter.
  • I try to be thrifty and not use stress as an excuse to go spend-crazy.
  • I try to achieve that ultimate state of simplicity and selflessness made for saints.
  • I try to always look for silver linings beneath the many sad layers of life's daily journeys.
  • I try to be more independent and self-sufficient, but still stay in touch and grounded.
  • I try to smile more, wake up much earlier than I'm used to, and work smarter to make the most of an ideal eight-hour work day.
  • I try to drink less coffee and eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • I try to read more and watch less TV.
  • I try to go on more adventures, with friends or alone.

I don't even wait for my birthday or the new year to do all these things. I wrote them down --- a long list of random things --- pinned them to my imagined cork-board, and try to live them out every chance I get.. .

And yet not everything goes as planned, right? Other than life being short and bumpy, accidents and detours pair up for the best surprises. To make us stronger or to lead us to the right path.

Yes, I don't always achieve all my resolutions or life goals. Not always on target, or I completely failed. There were momentary successes, and then I realized that that was not the end of it. I kept going. Made mistakes. Started all over again.
There are lessons that I never seemed to perfectly learn. It felt like at some points, I was at a similar bend of the road and still made the same wrong turn. Just too many arts made for life, I think. I keep them in three compartments --- falling (Gene falls), failing (Gene fell) and fulfilling (Gene's fallen).

I'm okay with rules but I'm also okay with excuses. I just have to know the right venue to give them the reins.
  • I may have improved some of my technical skills but I think that I have become ruthless and impatient. My Mama sees the better side of me, nonetheless. Talk about winning the "Mama lottery"? Someday, hopefully I can be patient and kind as Mama.
  • I don't think I will ever be a natural in making friends and being fun to be with. I'm alright in my own definition of FUN which may be good as "boredom" for most. This definition showed me treasured friendships so I have no regrets.
  • Loving myself more and being health-conscious are both easy and hard. Easy, because they make me better physically and emotionally. Hard, because the "metrics" are not always easy to measure. On another note, spending quality time with people who matter is NON-NEGOTIABLE for me.
  • I am supposed to be thrifty given my roots (half-Ilocana). I may have drops of Chinese blood, too. But I SPLURGE. Most of the time, I do not regret them. Sometimes I do. But then, my mantras are there: "Life is short", "I worked hard and deserve much better", or "Spend that now to feel better or with a shrink much later". (The third one, I just made that up).
  • Yes, I am simple. I want less and I'm content with my blessings. But I am unabashedly high-maintenance. It takes me at least 30 minutes to get ready and I'm obsessed with skin care. I have sensitive skin, literally, that I take extra measures to research and look for stuffs free of parabens and sulfates. I hate the smell of cigarettes and other extremely fragrant or unpleasant smells. And I will not be too shy to call you out, cover my nose and mouth, or show the world that your puffs of smoke are causing my allergic rhinitis at that exact moment. Though I think less about ME...More about my family, my dear friends and my eight dogs...
  • Bad traffic, lack of discipline, trash and dirt in gutters and sidewalks, impolite strangers and unreasonable demands. I have at least three of these on a daily basis. I think I handle them much better now. I leave the WORK compartment behind, as much as I can, as soon as I step out of the office. I see my long walk to get to the BGC bus as exercise, and I'm usually rewarded with organized queues and better seating. I tidy my room as "OC-ified" as I can so I can forget about the filth of the world outside. Yup, these gets me through the mundane challenges of every day. When the heavy load comes to chop me to pieces, I have enough strength most of the time. If I needed to, I take a few minutes (or hours, when put together) to shed tears and grit my teeth in anger. In frustration. In having maybe too high expectations. And then I MOVE ON. Tomorrow's another day.
  • After about nine years of living on my own, I still have MORE room to learn the ropes of being independent. Much more, being self-sufficient. Not achieving the latter in its perfect state is okay. I'm perfectly fine with depending on my dependable circle of family and close friends. The wisdom of older folks keep me sane and grounded. "It's not the end of the world". "I am not invincible".
  • I smile at strangers, especially at service personnel who might just need some cheering up in the middle of a tiring day. I say "Thank you" whenever I have reason to. I try to find reasons to wake up early. Like a warm cup of coffee at 7-11, breakfast with my dear early-bird friends at the office, reading a blog post at my first hours of spare time before 8:00 am, or riding a very spacious BGC bus to work. I start work early so I can finish early. If I came in late though, I still try to cut myself some slack. If I needed to stay in the office for much longer, I make time for in-between breaks to unwind and take in some fresh air. A fresh perspective from window-shopping or browsing through books did miracles on most days.
  • I love coffee. But I have more strength now to say NO when I already had one cup for the day. The once-a-month challenge may have been hard for me. But at least, it still landed me on the moon. Unless I have a solid excuse (e.g., late nighters, should not be asleep at certain times), I never go for more than one cup of coffee a day. Chamomile and English breakfast tea are my second bests now. I love juices and fruits. I feast on fresh strawberries and bananas as much as I can. Vegetables are plenty when I'm back home in Iloilo. However, in Manila, I limit myself to lettuce, sayote or bean sprouts (my preference).
  • Definitely watching less TV now, and reading more books. I prefer no specific genre. Reading any book make up my blissful weekends. I'm also glad to know that I have a two-year 10% discount on imported books c/o my Powercard.
  • I love discovering new things. It's not enough that I went to a new place and played tourist like most. I have to EXPERIENCE the place. If someone is coming with me, that's good. If I have to do it alone, why not? I still take calculated risks, though. But I'm game for discovering something new, sometimes getting lost in the process.
What's so special about 33?
It's another magical year, if I may call it that. I'm grateful for all that have come my way, and I don't know what's going to happen. For me, I'm already blessed that I get to live this moment now. With or without resolutions. Make or break. The moon or the stars.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the 32 years and for giving me another chance to start this 33rd.

:)

6 Life Lessons from the Mayweather-Pacquaio Fight

My random notes at the end of the 'Battle for Greatness' or the 'Fight of the Century':

1. It's not how many punches you throw, but how many actually landed, AND/OR how many did the judges see to have actually landed.

2. Winning real life battles takes both heart and strategy BUT braveheart will only get you through the drama. You need to play by the rules and use them to your advantage to actually convince Life that you deserve winning what you're fighting for.

3. Life is unfair ---- the crowd/audience, your opponent, and the referee may be playing it fair and square...and yet there are still the judges to contend with. What buffers, allowances, and error margins are for. You practice, you learn and you anticipate.

4. No more excuses --- the wrong socks, shoulder injuries, Las Vegas advantage, even cheating. I'd bet you wouldn't say the same things if the game went in your favor. Just accept defeat in the same way that you would have basked in the glorious analysis of everything had you won that round in Life.

5. Life is not all go-go-go. Sometimes it's taking a step back, hugging to buy time. :)

6. Life is a marathon. It's not how soon you reach the finish line. It's the experience that counts, win or lose.

Day 3 @ SG - Seconds (Part 2)

Here's the continuation of my "Seconds" on Day 3...:)

Art, art
I had my second dose of art supplies hoarding last March 23. This time, at Art Friend, which is located at Level 3 of Bras Basah Complex. I went there to validate the claim that supplies here are cheaper than those at Straits Art.

Inks
There are more choices for calligraphy inks at Art Friend. I got myself two more bottles: 1 bottle of Dr Ph. Martin's Bombay Blue India Ink, and 1 bottle of Winsor & Newton Black Indian Ink (sounds posh, eh?).

When I visited Straits Art last Saturday, I only got one bottle, a non-waterproof one at that, from a brand that I'm not familiar with (Stuart Houghton) but was recommended to me by the sales personnel.

Art Friend ink prices are also lower (I got mine for SGD 5.99 and SGD 9.95 - waterproof) than the ones sold at Straits Art (at SGD 11.50, non-waterproof). Apples to oranges, though, since these are from different brands and in different finishes.

Day 3 @ SG - Seconds (Part 1)

March 23 was the day of 'seconds', although it is Day 1 for work (at least for me).

Why? You ask.

Kaya, kaya

I had two sets of kaya toast in one day: the first one at Lau Pa Sat Food Center near the EY Singapore office (breakfast), and the second one inside the Raffles Shopping Center (dinner).

Shocks, that's just too much toast sets in a day, right? Two little cups of kopi (#shakeshead, too much coffee to justify a cheat day), FOUR eggs (no!) and four mini-slices of toasted bread with kaya jam (tastes like coconut jam with a likable twist) topped with butter.

There's no doubt that these kaya toasts spell Singapore in every bite :) And yes, the kopi is really good, too! A dark brown thing with sweetened milk served in a little cup. So "kopi" (my own translation: cute coffee) and soooo good for mornings (and evenings).

Soft-boiled eggs might surprise those who are used to having their eggs hard-boiled. However, these are requisites to experience the traditional kaya toast. Not one egg, but two. Soft-boiled to a certain point of raw-ness.

After three tries...Yes, you read that right --- I had my third kaya toast today at Toastbox --- partly because I really like the kaya jam and partly because I want to compare it with the Manila version...

Photographs at the Toastbox City Hall is not allowed (I find that weird, though. Who doesn't want free marketing for their food?

After three tries, I think I finally got the hang of it. The kopi and eggs are usually served first while you wait for the kitchen people to prepare your toast. The one at Toastbox City Hall branch really took a while that I had to follow up (thumbs-down).

I've finally gotten around the sequence and use of the little things served in the toast set tray --- how to break those soft-boiled eggs, put a dark soy sauce and mix them up together, and place the eggshells on the extra plate provided. The toasted bread is then dipped into the soft-boiled-egg-and-sauce mixture and complemented with the kopi. On hindsight, I could have opted for tea (teh) instead of coffee (kopi)...but well the first taste of kopi got me hooked already.

How's my Toastbox SG experience different from the one I had in Manila?

Hmm, the Greenbelt and SM Aura branches in Manila are more posh and clean, in my opinion. My perfect vision of a 'clean well-lighted place' when I need one. It's not that the City Hall and the Bugis branches that I've been to are not clean. They just look more worn out, probably because they've been open for a long time already.

Manila version: I remember that my eggs weren't brown and as soft-boiled as the ones here in SG. Unlike the pre-mixed version in SG, the condensed milk is served with the kopi which gives one the option to go un-sweetened. The kopi didn't seem as memorable and that may be because I placed too much milk. The bread tasted like French toast which was satisfying enough for me (French toast is my favorite) though not as memorable, now that I've tasted three versions of the kaya toast. At the end of my meal and at a time when I didn't fully comprehend the tradition of it all, I questioned the price tag of a breakfast set that I can easily prepare on my own. Now, I understand and appreciate what's so special about this kaya toast :)
