The Saturday Agenda: Pie & Mash + Greenwich Park

Someone craved for pie and mash...
Who else? The weekend getaway warrior, the advance planner, my almost-regular partner-in-crime for The Saturday Agenda here in London? Hahaha! Liza :)

I ordered the traditional pie and mash + coffee + apple crumble dessert. Too much? Maybe, but who could resist dessert?

It's self-service here. You choose your pies and add-ons at the counter where you can also see the menu (simple and straightforward). They whip up these orders pretty fast. After a few minutes, your orders will be ready and you can take them to your seat. There are two floors and the place supposedly can seat 125 according to Goodards' website.

Anecdote: I was standing next to Liza when she placed her orders (almost the same combination: her choice of pie and mash + dessert). When she was done, the lady at the till cheerfully chirped to us: "Enjoy ladies!". Liza responded: "No, she's ordering for herself." We had a good hearty laugh about this when we were upstairs. I wonder what the lady thought of us --- two petite ladies with big appetites, maybe?

Verdict: I think the mash was quite bland versus my expectations (I was thinking about Apartment 1B's mash back then --- that one was exquisite --- check it out when you're in Makati City, Philippines). The pie's filling was passable and some parts of the crust were a bit hard (I have a silent aversion towards hard-to-bite stuff; I always leave those uneaten).

Pie and mash may not be in my list of favourites. But I have to agree that this dish represents traditional London, East London to be specific, quite well. I wouldn't have it everyday but if I would want to be reminded of East London in the future, this would be my go-to dish.

The sweetness of apple crumble was a good complement to the pie. I had to hurry up so my ice cream didn't melt. I should have ordered the dessert much later. I was happy with my coffee but well, I'm easily made happy with coffee.

Almost an hour later...Liza and I were SO stuffed!!

Lesson learned: Take it easy. Don't let your appetites overestimate your capacity. Teach your eyes and heart to listen to your tummy. LOL.

Greenwich Park
We had way too much calories and had to shake these off!! We visited the National Maritime Museum. Then off to the Greenwich Park we went.

This park is massive with 74 hectares of wide open spaces. There are so many areas, corners, nooks and crannies to explore. The Greenwich Park is one of London's eight Royal Parks where you will also find other must-visits like the Royal Observatory and the Greenwich Meridian Line (ofcourse!).

I think it will be more beautiful when summer comes. I'd bring my beach mat, art materials, journal, a book or some, and set up a quiet-time picnic. :)

After an entire afternoon of leisurely walking around the Greenwich Park, we called it a day.

We passed by Cutty Sark...
Cutty Sark was a British clipper ship and is now preserved as a museum ship. The origin of the ship's name is quite an interesting story. It goes way back to a witch character, Nannie Dee, in the poem 'Tam o' Shanter' by Robert Burns. Cutty Sark literally means 'a far too short chemise or undergarment'. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Wicked witch. *shakes head*

Can you see the dummy hanging over the top of the ship? No, this is not a trick question. If you don't believe me, you've got to see it in person then. ;)

And we also passed by this...IT IS SO TRUE!! Don't you agree?
Ciao and till next Saturday :)
