My Sunday was low-key and calm. I reserved the whole morning for the Sunday service. First things first.
My companion senior, Rea and I had lunch at Sheng Kee, one of the food venues inside the Raffles Shopping Center. I bought water and cereal from the Raffles Market Place, the supermarket inside the shopping center which reminds me a lot of our own Rustan's back in Manila.
I spent the whole afternoon making up for lost blogging times :) When my tummy finally grumbled at about past eight in the evening, I headed out and looked for Hainanese chicken rice. I didn't have the courage to try out the famed Yet Con along Purvis Street due to the mixed reviews I've read from various blogs...Authentic old-school Hainanese cooking but bad customer service, tasteless chicken as compared to the modernized version at Tian Tian, no price indicated in the menu and surprise bills, and so forth.
I opted to play it safe and decided on the Hainanese chicken rice at Sin Swee Kee along Seah Street and adjacent to the Raffles Hotel.

The price of the Hainanese set depends on the part of the chicken. I requested for the thigh part and the steamed version (instead of roasted). It was good enough for me. The soup was okay - no richness to it, just plain soup with a little flavor. The rice was well-cooked, not lumpy but the fragrance is not that memorable. The chicken was well-cooked with no blood oozing from the pre-cut pieces (I hate it when that happens). There were lots of the gelatinous layer clinging to the chicken which I liked. Bottles of ginger and sauce are made available if you want to add extra punch. I tried mixing these a bit with my chicken but eventually finished most of my meal with no condiments.
'Not bad and not really impressive' - that's the best that I can make of my experience. I couldn't claim to be an expert on chicken rice, as the only other Hainanese chicken standard I have in my book is based on those random breaks at Wee Nam Kee in Makati.
My tummy filled and quite satisfied, I called it a night. Tomorrow's another day and my first day at the EY Singapore office. :)
