The Skinny Eats: In Singapore (April 2016)

"The Skinny Eats" (formerly Delectables) is intended for quick foodie "two cents" (maybe a few rants, but mostly raves) from yours truly --- the skinny lady who surprise, surprise actually eats but sadly (for me) hardly gains a pound and even loses more just by breathing, lol. Compared to the more sumptuous, three-course equivalent in the former Delectables posts, these ones are more concise in the same eat-and-run pace when one goes through pit stops.

The ratings I use are simple:
❤ Nah, did not meet expectations.
❤❤ Good enough for a one-off meal but not as memorable.
❤❤❤ Loved it! Recommended and will not mind going back!!!
To keep it focused, these are based purely on the overall dining experience taste-wise. Service, food presentation and price were not factored in the above rating. Some comments about these other factors may be included in my notes under the particular pit stop, as deemed necessary.

For the first installment of The Skinny Eats, here's the rundown of 17 "pit stops" (yes 17, and I didn't even include ALL food stops) made during my three-week Singapore assignment this April 2016:

Pit stop 1: Toastbox (Suntec Food Republic)
Ordered: Laksa and kopi
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes: Order just the right bowl size 'cause the coconut milk in the laksa can be quite overwhelming in large amounts. You have to have this in Singapore! Even if there are Toastbox franchises in other countries (including the Philippines), I strongly believe that the laksa in Singapore tastes much better and authentic. If you find time to try this in hawker centres, all the much better!
Notes from IG: Laksa, I missed you!!! #laksa #toastbox till I drop #nofilter (P.S. I've been good; only 2 cups of kopi in 7 days.)

Pit stop 2: Ya Kun Kaya Toast (Orchard Road Station)
Ordered: Kaya Toast Set
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes: There is a 'proper way' of eating the kaya toast set so you blend in with the locals. There's a bit of explanation of that in my previous post: Seconds Part 1
Notes from IG: Apparently, this is edible and is supposed to help remove toxins from your body. Finished an entire 🍞 loaf of about 6-8 slices today.

Pit stop 3: Lau Pa Sat - Mugiho Boulangerie
Ordered: A Loaf of Black Bread
Verdict: ❤❤
Notes: I cannot confirm the cleansing promise (scientifically) but it wasn't so bad for something that's supposed to be good for you.

Pit stop 4: No Signboard (Geylang Road)
Ordered: White Pepper Crab and Chili Crab
Verdict: ❤❤
Notes: After enduring two weeks of not-so-nice accommodation, the team decided to celebrate our last night here in Geylang's No Signboard which is supposedly famous for its chili crabs. The crabs didn't disappoint but beware though as it can be such a tourist trap. The servers/waiters do not converse in English very well for some reason. I found that quite interesting as most Singaporean servers in other restaurants seem to speak English or Singlish (combination of English and Singaporean languages) quite well including those in most hawker centres. Also, that seems odd considering that the No Signboard restaurant franchise and this particular branch are both quite famous and the servers/waiters were geared with headsets to help them coordinate the seating and orders. Do not say 'yes' unless you fully understand what is being offered or you might end up paying for things you did not order. In our case, it was not so bad and the worse thing that happened was that we paid a ridiculous amount for a plate of peanuts. For all the others offered, we had to politely decline as we knew that nothing is free here (think hot towels, bread, and yes including the usually complimentary peanuts while waiting for your order).

Pit stop 5: This could be in one of the food stalls inside the Malaysian Food Centre or a similar food centre near the Universal Studios Singapore.
Ordered: Kimchi Rice with Matcha Drink
Verdict: ❤❤
Notes: You use one of those tablets to choose your orders from the many food stalls inside the centre, make your payment, and later collect the orders from the respective stalls indicated in your printed receipt. What can I say? So efficient and neat!

Pit stop 6: Chopsticks by The Asian Kitchen (Raffles Place)
Ordered: Siomai
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: shaomai, shui mai, shu mai, sui mai, shui mei, siu mai, shao mai, siew mai, or siomai?

Pit stop 7: Din Tai Fung (Raffles Place)
Ordered: All sorts of dumplings and the bestseller chicken soup
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: Team consensus: We deserve this! 🎉
#lastsupperinsg

Pit stop 8: Asia Square
Ordered: Meal D6 (which I wasn't exactly sure about) which I later found out to include rice, two sunny-side-up eggs and a piece of pork
Verdict: ❤❤
Notes from IG: When you didn't understand what you ordered and it turned out okay...
#foreignerproblems

Pit stop 9: Jollibean (Raffles Place)
Ordered: Milk Tea
Verdict:
Notes from IG: Same font type. Hmmm, coincidence?
[On how this oddly resembles the Philippines' very own Jollibee]

Pit stop 10: Salad Stop (One Raffles Place)
Ordered: Quinoa
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: Never eat ingredients you can't pronounce. Except quinoa. Can't say no to quinoa. 😊
kee-NOO-ah or KEEN-wah?
#quinoa #saladstop #pronunciation

Pit stop 11: Ginza Bairin (ION Orchard Mall)
Ordered: Donburi
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: Why is this called a parent-and-child donburi?
#oyakodon #eatingjapanese #lastlunchinsg
[The answer relates to the ingredients.]

Pit stop 12: Can't remember exactly where but this could be in that food centre near Republic Plaza. Don't worry though, there are lots of similar meals like this in most food centres.
Ordered: Chicken & Brown Rice with Honey Chrysanthemum Tea
Verdict: ❤❤
Notes from IG: Healthy is easy here.

Pit stop 13: Elements & Co. (137 Cecil St)
Ordered: Flat White & Croissant
Notes from IG: Oh hello there! Missed me?
Because life is too short for bad coffee ☕...

Pit stop 13: Elements & Co. (137 Cecil St)
Ordered: Flat White & Croissant
Notes: Impressed with the flat white; the croissant was just melt-in-my-mouth delish!
Notes from IG: I will surely miss my flat whites here... 💓 and the croissants... #flatwhite #byecoffee #coffeecheatday

Pit stop 14: Sakae
Ordered: Sashimi
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: Why don't you come up and sashimi sometime?
#Japanese #salmon #sashimi #sakae

Pit stop 15: Chinatown
Ordered: Bah Kuh Teh
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: The pursuit of the bah kuh teh: I had my first @ Amoy; this second one at Chinatown was on the spicier side. Bye comfort food; I will miss you much.
Some FYI: Bah kuh teh literally means "meat bone tea". But there is no tea here. Only pork ribs simmered in a broth of "secret ingredients".

Pit stop 16: Maxwell Hawker Centre
Ordered: Chicken Hainanese Rice
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: Definitely a must-eat when in SG: Tian Tian Hainanese chicken rice at Maxwell hawker centre
#chickenrice #singaporefood #hawkercentre #maxwell

Pit stop 17: Garrett - Changi Airport
Ordered: Popcorn (good for one)
Verdict: ❤❤❤
Notes from IG: Sometimes, it's perfectly alright to be selfish. 😝
#garrett #popcorn #chicago

I had some of the best foodie trips while I was here!
Till I come back again, Singapore! <3 font="">
